Origins
Or, how the Little Flopsy Ponies came to be.
Little Flopsy Ponies were started several years ago when I worked/took lessons/and boarded my mare at a local riding stable. There were *lots* of little girls and a few little boys running around, and everyone was friendly with one another. When Christmas rolled around I wanted to do some sort of gift for each of the children but was unable to figure out something that was both affordable but also memorable to each child. I wanted my little gifts to be special.
And so came about the idea for little stuffed ponies that looked just like the horse or pony ridden/owned/leased/or loved by the child in question. The ponies were a big hit, and I continued to make them for several Christmas holidays thereafter. There are more than a few local riders (and lots of old school horses and ponies!) who now have something like three or four of these little stuffed equines, all from those original gifts.
Who is "Flopsy Lopsy"?
The "Real" Flopsy pony is my six-year-old Connemara/TB cross mare, Highlights, or as she is more commonly known, Miss Flopsy. Flopsy has a big, long, registered Irish name for her official papers, and her true call name is Highlights, but when she was a foal she had truly enormous ears. As a joke, we started calling her Flopsy Lopsy...and the name stuck. She's had it ever since, despite repeated attempts to re-instate her true call name of Highlights. Flopsy has since grown into her ears, but not out of her unfortunate nick-name. Flopsy is now largely a pet due to a congenital defect of her right front hoof (a grade 1.5 club, not severe). She enjoys a charmed life filled with getting into mischief, birthday garden parties for her and her human and pony friends every May, a regular member of pony camps and birthday parties as a Pony Ride horse. She is a sweet-natured horse who loves people and adores children. It just seemed right to name her little stuffed felt friends after her.
